Greetings from a warm, loud and lovely place where the Daddy drags a ladder out onto the front porch every morning (before coffee!) to view, through spotting scope, elk cavorting around his hunting grounds in the mountains.

And, where the daughter begs to play our new Math Bingo game.

Ha! Learning disguised as gaming.

And the son, between thrusting books in my lap to read to him about ships (The Titanic, Magellan’s Armada, Civil War Ironclads…), is drawing.

Hi dude yourself.

And the Mama has a story up on Mamalode, a story which will either make you miss having a 2-year old around, or maybe just a little grateful to have passed through that stage, or give you a glance at what’s to come. Either way, click on over (I do get paid by clicks).

A 2-year old I once knew.

Also, the new Edible San Juan Mountain Magazine is out! (I mean, as soon as I get the 40 boxes out of my driveway and distributed round town). I have a story in it about your favorite drink: coffee.

What are you making for tomorrow? I’m making La Plata County cranberry sauce, AKA apple-cherry sauce. Dan’s making a roast elk. Happy Thanksgiving to all you precious peeps.

Rachel

“marinating in their own drool”, from the mamalode piece, made me laugh out loud. We are smoking a turkey breast, but made pot roast with our own goat shoulder this week, and will do “leg of goat” or “goat osso buco” for Christmas. I’m drinking mulled wine made with our own fruit wines.

We need to have a talk about killing ones own animals. I need to channel your bravery and resolve. Killing our chickens keeps slipping down down down on the to-do list. But these girls haven’t laid an egg in weeks (partially molting and November, but mostly because they are 3 years old). You slit throats while hanging upsidedown?

All your homegrown Thanksgiving food sounds AMAZING. Enjoy!

A carefully, funnily balanced insight on what it’s like to be 2 – and what it’s like to deal with a 2 year-old. Truly enjoyable :o)

Also, fantastic drawing from Col !

Oooh. The Mamalode was a good one. So true about shrugging off in the second what you strategized about the first. Um. That was sort of a sentence. Our first continues to demand so much strategizing and marshalling of resources that number two, who is three, could probably detonate a bomb under the dining room table and we would shrug, comment on his threeness, and throw a passing comment about treating people with kindness his way.

I know! At first it seems unfair to the 2nd that the 1st gets so much more parental focus those first few years (and beyond), but truly what a gift to be trusted and left alone to detonate your own figurative bombs under the dining room table. xo

Happy thanksgiving Rachel and familia! I will miss you this year. I am thinking of you from Tucson where stale forgotten crusty pomegranates dangling from the branch are still delicious. Thanks for snuggling on Jojo for the great day of thanks party. You are his family, therefore my family and we love you dearly. Nice two-sy article on mamalode by the way. I’m gonna read it again ; ) hugs and loves! Aunty Em

Totally brilliant article! I don’t have a 2 year old but looked after my goddaughter solo for a week when she was a month off her 2nd birthday. An exhausting amusing eye opener for sure! (And I’m still desperate for one!)

Yeah, that is two alright. Now, with my fourth at age three, I’m wondering how much of my shrugging ‘she’s three’ is acceptable and how much I might be nuturing a sociopath. Spectacular dragon (the drawing, not my three year old, though there are similarities).

Doesn’t the fourth just raise themselves? xo

We made chocolate pecan pie and pumpkin pie, not to take to the dinner we went to, just to have around all weekend and share with people who stop over. A huge pan of sweet potatoes and greens and some cream and gruyere. Lots of bread. There is one little slice of pecan pie left, and I am saving it for a special moment and person.
