It takes a village

2010 February 5

Please don’t think for a moment that because there are Shameless Love Fests here at 6512 and growing, that our days are always spent wrapped in a cocoon of sticky sweetness; or that I’m so ensnared in the web of my childrens affection that I don’t flinch when their demands pelt me like rocks from a slingshot.

Also, I bow down to that institution called preschool, or our babysitting co-op, or the places where my children can go where they are loved, safe and exploring the life cycle of a box elder bug while bending another adult’s ears into pretzels with their boundless questions; it takes a village and I am infinitely grateful for ours.

As I’ve said before, weekends are a bite-sized truffle and everyone wants a taste.

This weekend, you will find Col experimenting with the velocity of snow, in our front yard:

Rose, will likely be “getting all pwetty” and hitting the living room dance floor:

Dan, will be scanning for elk and deer through his binoculars from our bedroom window:

Or performing late night bow voodoo at the kitchen table:

The chickens are Living The Dream in their straw-strewn cabana:

And I will be breathing in this lovely, wild family, alternately gritting my teeth and feeling the hinge on my heart swing wide open. And as always, scribbling copious notes in my faithful little notebook:

And wishing you a lovely weekend!

i too bow to the power of preschool and babysitters…and this week i especially bow to the power of our amazing mother’s helpers (10-12 year old babysitters-in-training).

this past week was so deliciously smooth thanks to the help of our amazing village of friends!!!

ps ~ what kind of chickens do you have? i’m squinting at the screen and trying to see if any of them are arucanas (a favorite breed of ours).

Erin, three out of four are araucanas. They are so sweet; they squat down so we can pick them up. Very social. The fourth, Lily, is a mystery.

That is one awesome snow slide. The coolest playground equiptment right in your backyard! Amazing. We are about to get a big storm, but I do not think anywhere as much as you have. That slide makes me kinda want it though. Have a great weekend!!

Rosie has her ducky stuffed in her shirt for safekeeping. She did recently see a fancy bikini and tell me “when I have big boobs I want to wear that.” Yikes.

With that panda purse and white shoe/black shoe combo, your little one is ready for “Project Runway,” for sure! Also, I love your green pen.

Ok, crazy. I sooooo feel this way. I’m often worried that the way I write on my blog promotes this deception that my life is ushy gushy all the time and the sucky parts are still smothered in sugar somehow. Anyway, thanks for this. Your writing is lovely. I also bow down, quite low to our precious preschool. ahhhhh, and the starbucks that keeps me company while she is there. :)

Anyway, sorry, I totally don’t know you, just stumbled across your blog!

I loove your snowslide! And I am laughing at the similarity of your husband and mine and the checking of the bow. Cory just finished his. They would have so much to talk about. Look at Rose! She is so cute.
