I am now offering professional editing services for clients local and far flung. If you aren’t local, we can communicate via e-mail, phone or U.S. mail. I love turning on my editing brain to help make your work sharper, tighter and more connected to a reader’s heart. I charge $45/hr.
What clients have to say about our work together:
Anyone can call themselves an editor or teacher, but what I look for is someone who can actually write! It was the quality of Rachel’s own writing that led me to choose her as an editor, and I’m extremely glad I did. She catches all the right things. She has helped me grow tremendously as a writer.

“I appreciated how you started the call by asking what my expectations were and where I was coming from. Before we talked I wasn’t sure what to expect— I didn’t know if you would talk too much, or if you wouldn’t talk enough. As it turns out, I thought you struck a perfect balance. You listened well but your words were thoughtful and I felt immediate rapport with you.
Also, I noticed that you asked me to define the specific issues I was concerned about early on in the call and then you rephrased them back to me. When you did that I was thinking Yay!… she’s got experience working with people professionally and knows how to do this kind of thing…
As for the editing, It was very helpful. I could tell you had spent time reading and thinking seriously about my essays. I’ll admit I thought I had polished them so well before submitting them that I was starting to feel sorry for you. Like you would want to show that you really are a wonderful editor but there would simply be nothing that you could find to improve. (big laugh!) In reality, I love that you found so much to tighten and I can’t wait to get back to those pieces later on today to work with them. The specific suggestions were clear and show your skill and quality editing.

Rachel is a kind reader, not so gentle as to be ineffective, but not bruisingly brutal, either. She’s a 100% in-your-corner mentor. I’ve had editing sessions with others where I came away feeling like I’d had an emotional root canal. Not so with Rachel. After both of Rachel’s editing sessions, I found myself thinking, “Dang! I got this!” Yes, indeedy. Worth it at twice the price, no kiddin’. Plus–I don’t know whether or not this is a standard part of Rachel’s editing package–but when I received the printout of my story with Rachel’s comments in the margin, I discovered that Col had drawn an original masterpiece on the last page. By far, one of the best snail mail packages I’ve ever received. If you want a kind, objective, reading of your work and some advice on how to make it even better than it already is, shoot Rachel an email. She’s the best!
