Editing Services

I am now offering professional editing services for clients local and far flung. If you aren’t local, we can communicate via e-mail, phone or U.S. mail. I love turning on my editing brain to help make your work sharper, tighter and more connected to a reader’s heart. I charge $45/hr.

What clients have to say about our work together:

Anyone can call themselves an editor or teacher, but what I look for is someone who can actually write! It was the quality of Rachel’s own writing that led me to choose her as an editor, and I’m extremely glad I did. She catches all the right things. She has helped me grow tremendously as a writer.

“I appreciated how you started the call by asking what my expectations were and where I was coming from. Before we talked I wasn’t sure what to expect— I didn’t know if you would talk too much, or if you wouldn’t talk enough. As it turns out, I thought you struck a perfect balance. You listened well but your words were thoughtful and I felt immediate rapport with you.
Also, I noticed that you asked me to define the specific issues I was concerned about early on in the call and then you rephrased them back to me. When you did that I was thinking Yay!… she’s got experience working with people professionally and knows how to do this kind of thing…
As for the editing, It was very helpful. I could tell you had spent time reading and thinking seriously about my essays. I’ll admit I thought I had polished them so well before submitting them that I was starting to feel sorry for you. Like you would want to show that you really are a wonderful editor but there would simply be nothing that you could find to improve.  (big laugh!) In reality, I love that you found so much to tighten and I can’t wait to get back to those pieces later on today to work with them. The specific suggestions were clear and show your skill and quality editing.

Rachel is a kind reader, not so gentle as to be ineffective, but not bruisingly brutal, either. She’s a 100% in-your-corner mentor. I’ve had editing sessions with others where I came away feeling like I’d had an emotional root canal. Not so with Rachel. After both of Rachel’s editing sessions, I found myself thinking, “Dang! I got this!” Yes, indeedy. Worth it at twice the price, no kiddin’. Plus–I don’t know whether or not this is a standard part of Rachel’s editing package–but when I received the printout of my story with Rachel’s comments in the margin, I discovered that Col had drawn an original masterpiece on the last page. By far, one of the best snail mail packages I’ve ever received. If you want a kind, objective, reading of your work and some advice on how to make it even better than it already is, shoot Rachel an email. She’s the best!

    Hi Rachel,
I live in Durango and have been following your blog/writing for a long time. I have written a children’s story (probably suitable for ages 5-10). It’s called “BackCountry Boys” and is about 2 boys skiing in the backcountry with their father. Their experiences take place in CO. I have already had the book worked over by an editor. I’m sure more editing could be done! I’m looking for someone with the resources to help me get it published and to share in that experience. I don’t have any illustrations for the book. If you’re interested in looking at the draft please contact me! Thanks much!

Web traffic is very important for the popularity of your website. Therefore, given that marketing is so to speak at the core of any business, if you want to sell well, you have to advertise well, and you can do this on the internet, given it is the best means to help you achieve your goals to this effect due to its massive exposure and incessant expansion. An SEO will also provide ongoing monitoring, rank reports and up to date recommendations.
