children and music

2012 December 1
by Rachel Turiel

The spoon and chopstick band has been rehearsing daily.

spoon and chopsticks

Sometimes they record themselves playing music on the video function of Rose’s new camera, and then play it back. Repeatedly. Luckily, you can’t hear the sound of my teeth gnashing over the music.

Feeling it now. Note: steel measuring cup cymbal hanging off of green chair. Clever!

We’ve been listening to the four songs you can play on the Lumineers website. Repeatedly.

Rose is playing the harmonica along with the Lumineers. Note: in 800 sf house, you are never far from the bathroom. Hi toilet! Also, the top of the fridge becomes actual legitimate storage space. Natalie C., can you find your xmas card from last year?

Rose asked me to turn the Lumineers off for a moment. She scurried away with pen and paper and then announced that she was ready to resume playing.

So much easier when you have the proper sheet music.

Speaking of music, are you going to the Guitar Dojo concert this afternoon? Yes? Fabulous. See you there.

xo,

Rachel

ps: If you haven’t read my latest pieces on Mamalode.com

* on the teeth-gnashing delights of raising a 2-year old.

* the journey of birthing a premature child.

Thanks Caraway, there was an awkward stage for awhile, but it’s “growing” on me too. xo

we live in a small house too and i feel like there is no escape from noise nor the mess of creating. and storage space? anything with a flat surface counts as storage space!

And you’ve got about twice as many people in your house! This morning Dan cleared some of the longstanding clutter (olive oil bottle/sunscreen/salves) off a kitchen counter and put them in a cabinet, and then presented me with, tada!, 2 sf more counter space. This is a big deal.

Oh I hear the noise, it is coming from the band in my living room and the concert in my kitchen. I know someday we will miss this noise but… my ears.

I can’t stop listening to the Lumineers. I’m a bit obsessive, actually. But it pays off when I hear little Olive say, “but I can write a song..”
And, is that our Christmas card from last year?? I think I see that west side of the island horizon..
Yea, small space loud music here, too. Makes for everyone on the same musical plane at least..

We love the Lumineers too! It’s on constant rotation in the car. It’s only slightly awkward when they (ages 2.5 and 5.5) start singing how “classy girls don’t kiss in bars…”, but they think it says “classy girls don’t kiss in body foo…”. Then my daughter asks, “Mom, what’s a ‘body foo?”!

PS – I am a lurker, I guess. :) I found you via your interview with Erin Goodman.
