Three classes for you

2012 September 19

ONE:

peaceworkscoaching

PeaceWorks Coaching is offering a half day workshop, Positive Discipline, for parents and educators on Saturday, October 6th, 1pm – 5pm, at the Yoga Durango studio at 1140 Main Ave. Both teachers are Certified Positive Discipline Educators and this workshop is appropriate for parents of children up to age 18.

Positive Discipline is my parenting language, or at least the language I am trying to become more fluent in daily. The reason this style (de-emphasizing praise/punishment, emphasizing cooperation and personal responsibility) resonates with me is not just because it works, but also because it feels better to create cooperation without threats of punishments (which studies show don’t work anyway). Of course this is hard, it’s a muscle that needs exercising, which is why I am grateful for opportunities like this workshop.

The tools and concepts of Positive Discipline include:

  • Mutual respect. Adults model firmness by respecting themselves and the needs of the situation, and kindness by respecting the needs of the child.
  • Identifying the belief behind the behavior. Effective discipline recognizes the reasons kids do what they do and works to change those beliefs, rather than merely attempting to change behavior.
  • Effective communication and problem solving skills.
  • Discipline that teaches (and is neither permissive nor punitive).
  • Focusing on solutions instead of punishment.
  • Encouragement (instead of praise). Encouragement notices effort and improvement, not just success, and builds long-term self-esteem and empowerment.

The cost of the workshop is $49, and if you sign up by 9/27, the early bird cost is $39. And if you enter 6512andgrowing into the promotional code, you get $10 off. And if you bring a friend, you can enter BringaFriend into the promotional coupon link for another $10 off. And if you bring another friend, well, you can take another $10 off, and the workshop is only $9!

*Also, Friday, October 5th, 7:30 – 9pm, also at Yoga Durango, PeaceWorks invites you to their free talk: The Top 10 Tools for Raising Responsible Kids.

For more info and/or to sign up go here and click on the orange E.

See you there!

The Art of Fermentation

Participants will sample many different ferments and take home a pint of kimchi, made in class with local/organic ingredients, and a starter to make a gallon of fermented ginger ale. Participants are responsible for bringing 2 pint jars with lids, the rest of the ingredients will be supplied. Space is limited to 10.

THREE:

Edible Weeds and Fall Gardening

Saturday, October 6th 10am – 11am.

Common garden weeds are packed with nutrients, adapted to native soil conditions and natural rainfall. Come to my home garden and learn to identify common, edible weeds, the best time to pick them, which parts are edible and how to prepare them. Come home with handouts and recipes and sample purslane salad dressing on a fresh salad of mixed greens. Limited to 10 people.

Also, learn how doing a little work now in the garden can translate into fresh greens next March.

Cost: $10

Too bad Durango is a bit of a drive. Those classes all sound awesome. Particularly interested in the positive discipline bit because I *try* and I *get* the concept, but dang, sometimes it’s hard to pin to a real life situation. I have read some of the theory, but I could really use some concrete, real-world examples.

Real life situations. Exactly. Particularly, what to do when Col gives away all of Rose’s gum to our neighbor when you believe that punishment is not the solution.

I feel so fortunate to read your description of the Positive Parenting workshop and principles tonight. It seems we are incorporating all those values into our parenting strategies; and although it’s not always easy or convenient, we also feel strongly that it’s how we need to parent our 2 1/2 year old. I’m in Austin, TX, so thanks for letting those of us reading from far away in on a little Durango love. (Just yesterday we were teaching our daughter a new word: cooperation :)
