science espeerment

2012 August 31
by Rachel Turiel

Note to self: When singing Dancing Queen, it goes: feel the beat from the tambourine, not trampoline. This is clearly why the disco motherhood movement never took off.

Also, Col would like to share his latest “espeerment” with you.

This is “cut-telling medicine,” which I can hardly believe I’m sharing on the world wide web as we haven’t filed for a patent yet. But, this is important enough that it really should be free for the people, always, like Abba videos on YouTube.

Col says, “first, you find 2 small green bottles.” (Editor’s note: These were found on a recent bike ride; it pays to always be on alert). “Next, fill them with water and orange peels and a few mints. Then they get all acidic.”

Rose: “well, I gave you the mints, so it’s my espeerment too.”

*Pause for thinking*

Rose: “Actually, you stole them from me.”

Col: “Anyway. Then, if your friend comes over, tell him to stick his finger in the jar.” (Editor’s note: this was Col’s longtime friend, Mathew, read more about these two here). “Then, if your friend’s finger stings,” wait for it, people, “he has a cut.”

Hence, cut-telling medicine.

Also, Dan is due home tomorrow and I realized I’m just the teeniest bit ambivalent about his return. It’s not that I’m not excited to see him, but more that I’m enjoying the gifts of this time alone with the kids. We hit our stride about 1/2 way through the week (after the ice cream and spontaneous parking lot dancing, and incidentally, after my phone consult with the amazing Natalie), a stride which has included reading two chapters each night of Prince Caspian, getting dressed directly from our clothes drying rack, and not being too much of a stickler about sobriety.

Also, #2, I don’t think Dan’s had any luck yet, and for newish readers, the man hunts with a homemade bow. Homemade, as in, he cuts down the tree, dries the wood for months, and performs a series of voodoo operations with hand tools to produce this:

Hunting with a primitive bow in 2012 is only slightly different than it was for the Anasazi Indians who once inhabited this land, which is to say, it’s damn challenging. But there was this, which we’re still celebrating.
Also #3, the best roasted tomato recipe ever, as requested by Aunt Jan.

Also #4, A Kimchi recipe to take all the fear out of fermenting coming henceforth along with another chance to gain discounted entrance to Rebecca’s fabulous e-course.

Have a lovely, long weekend friends.

Rachel

there are some moments when I look at my son (6yo), and see him as a teenager – suntanned, blond surfer with blue eyes. Col looks just like his older self in the first picture too.

There was an article in last weeks Sunday NY Times magazine, saying that play and exploration is better for a child than flash cards. Col is clearly on the right track as a budding scientist!

Hm. Not too much of a sticker about sobriety, and the boy has a bunch of empty Jagermeister bottles…fascinating.
I totally get you about the ambivalence. I always squirrel away a nugget of anxiety about solo parenting stretches, and then I enjoy them but sort of pretend to be all beleagured and beaten down by it. It’s true.

I get that pre-solo parenting anxiety and it really is hard the first couple days, mostly because I’m adjusting to the injustice of making my own coffee and being the first line of defense in the morning. And then the kids and I all get really lax together (cereal for dinner! no need to clean everyone’s espeerments off the table!) and ignore as many responsibilities as possible in the pursuit of ABBA, ice cream and general fun, which is always a win-win. xo

The espeerment is fabulous as is the documentation of said espeerment. He and Mbot (4) should open a lab together. A few days ago, Mbot, who nurtured a glass bottle of molding bread for months, said, “Mom, Ginger (niece, babysitter, 20) doesn’t know that medicine comes from mold. She said I was wrong.” Maybe we should teach them how to distill….I–and it sounds like you–would save on the wine bill that goes along with having such imaginative bots.

I’m pretty sure hunting with a primitive bow in 2012 is WAY harder than it was for the Anasazi. A) I’m guessing (but I’m sure Dan *knows*) game was more plentiful back then, and B) animals were not accustomed to watching for bipedal men with far-shooting rifles.

i’d be inclined to think dan is actually working harder than the anasazi, i’m guessing they had a bigger herd of elk to work with… maybe i’m wrong. i know nothing of elk populations in colorado, only that wild populations of just about everything are lower than they once were. i’m sure he’s back by now since i am late to the show these days when commenting… but i am going to go look and see how he fared now! xoxo
