* the upside of insomnia is the sheer amount of reading you can accomplish at weird hours of the night. I’ve been on an Anne Lamott binge. I just love her so; somehow she makes me wish I too was a recovering alcoholic who found Jesus. If you’re a fan, this video sums her up. Also, someone was kind enough to put together a whole website of her wise and witty quotes.

* Ever since making the connection between Cat Stevens and chai I’ve been hushing the kids with my rendition of his song, Trouble. They’re so generous about not noticing my creaky singing voice, and it’s amazing how quickly a small squabble over who gets their splinter pulled first becomes forgotten when I hit those first sorrowful notes. Also, they want to know what “death’s disguise” means. Anyone? What a beautiful, sad song. Oh, Cat. I mean, er Yusef.

cat stevens makes me all swoony and weak in the knees. and that song was in harold and maude, a fave of mine. watched it recently when i needed a pick me up ;-)
your sweet girl cleaning – love. does she do hardwood? love your floors…they remind me of my old house in abq, their chill under your feet even in the hottest months.
Now there’s a smart girl. Helmets are important. You never know what lurks under the couch.
that’s so weird and good that you mention anne lamott because since i started imagining the novel you would write, which i have been for some reason, trying to figure out why i would even think such a thing, i kept coming back to anne’s voice and the honest, unapologetic, brave, intelligently tempered, uninterested in superiority or righteousness or position, voice of hers. what’s the adage from poetry workshops…” “don’t apologize, don’t explain”…? (I think it’s Richard Hugo). I get something similar from both of you. So THANKS. and love the helmeted cleaning helmet. I’m sorry, but whenever I see a picture of or think about your daughter Rose all I can think of is the term, “an interesting side-dish.” Impossibly unforgettable.

rachel… it’s martha. I was signed in, for some reason, as cadenlukas because that was my friend’s password protected blog, on wordpress, that i’d been viewing. I guess I see now that I need to sign out after I visit her site. Anyway, just to clear up any confusion you might have had… I wanted to let you know it was me, not that you feel you know me any differently from some obscure cadenlukas e-character, but just so you know, it’s the martha/me that’s been a reader and fan of yours for awhile.
seriously, i went through a similar anne lamot phase and wished the same thing. weird. and my dear friend choreographed the most incredible solo piece to trouble. i always replay it in my mind when i hear the song . . . she actually made a series of pieces to a few of his songs and it was one of my most joyful dance experiences! xo
