why we don’t need TV

2012 April 11

The kids are placing bets on how long it will take them to scoot—belly down on top of my sweater, Col on top of Rose—from the kitchen to the bathroom.

“I think 4 minutes,” Rose wagers.

“I think 3,” says Col.

I start the clock timer, give them the official countdown and they begin scootching. I try not to think about what my sweater is picking up in the race across the floor. The kids move as slow as geological time, changing their bets as they go.

“Now, I think 3 minutes…no, no, 2 minutes,” Rose announces, dog paddling on tile with Col on her back.

It takes them exactly one minute to traverse the 15 feet.

“One minute! We both win, Coley!” Rose says cryptically. “Now, lets time ourselves going back.”

Enter me in the give away! My 9 year old has woken up early the last two days and I’ve busted her watching TV. Family rule, no TV on school days (in the am). Today when I scolded her and unplugged her she moved on to designing an Earth Day poster for school. Now THAT is what I’m talkin’ about!

Ha! Sweater races. Now that’s creative. I just love glimpses like this into the minds of children.

Kids definitely do NOT need t.v.! Sweater belly racing is a great way to clean the floor and have fun! Who said having fun cost money?? Your kids are great!
