island
Hi friends,
Did I mention that by the grace of frequent flyer miles and the generosity of my parents we’re in Kauai?
I know. It’s completely insane that places like this exist, places where you could imagine ditching silly things like money and calendars and shoes and becoming a fruitarian, living off mango, coconuts, pineapple, avocados, bananas, rambutans, papaya, and, well, a few chocolate covered macadamia nuts.
If we’re not at the beach, then you can usually find us eating. The locally-grown food is crazy cheap, which is eliciting a frenzy of avocado-eating. However, you may or may not be glad to hear that after a quick discussion, Dan and I passed on the roadkill wild boar spotted yesterday.
Sending much island love to you all.
In search of the maui-wowie,
Rachel
Um, NO, you did not mention this! :) Awesome! I’m so very happy for you!!! Enjoy! :)

I think my toes defrosted just looking at your pictures.
hawaii is so beautiful especially if you have the chance to go off grid there, take a moment and eat some local market thai food, it is amazing, green papaya salad is soo good in hawaii. have fun!
Huh? Wha??? I’m looking out a barren, snowless, windy 12.9 degree day with two kids hacking up their lungs in the background and feeling not a tiny bit jealous (though after our most recent vacation, I don’t plan to every go anywhere with my family ever, ever again). Have a wonderful time and eat a few extra avocados for me!
Oh, boy – have fun! The fruit looks divine! Are the avocados absolutely massive? The ones that grow here are bigger than mangoes, and I looove them. You’re so close to me, and yet so far away. Wishing you plenty more tropical fruit, and loads of sunshine.
The avocados are insanely massive. I’m completely in love with them. Good luck with your upcoming move. The tropics would be a hard place to leave!
Kauai is one of my all time favorite places. Those small bananas they call apple bananas are delish. And the mangoes! Look, I’m using exclamation points and feel totally justified. Take a cruise down the river if you can. It’s the one thing I regret not doing while I was there. Talk to the locals as much as you can. You’ll find many “cousins”. Mahalo!
how wonderful!! Hope you have a WONDERFUL time!!!!
If you can find them (not sure when they are ripe, but we had them when we were there for xmas a few years ago) try a cherimoya. Super yummy, and great in a smoothie.
Darn, we never did see those. But did fall in love with lilliquoi (passionfruit) at the last moment.
you guys are so awesome. i love that you are in hawaii!!
I love the electric colors in these photos; what a treat to see them on this cold, gray Midwestern afternoon. Enjoy your trip and your time together! xo
What? No boar ribs? And is $2/avocado really cheap? Hope you continue to enjoy your winter escape!! #luckyfamily
Seriously?! Now that’s the way to start off a new year. Aloha!
So fabulous! Couldn’t be more happy for you. I have a friend who lives on Kauai. Now I can be jealous of you both. :)
What! I didn’t expect this post !!!! What a pleasant surprise :o) I tell you, your life is really one to be envied, can I be one of your kids instead of the internet granny? Forget about that road kill, it was sour anyway. Have fun and enjoy it all :o)
sounds pretty dreamy…most winters i would pass as i love the cold and snow…but since we have no snow i would be happy to eat tropical fruit on an island in the sun! have fun:)
Pennie, We have no snow either, and it seems much of the US doesn’t. Missing it for sure!
xo, Rachel
Aloha Rachel…Just as Bella and I are headed to Durango (by way of St Louis) you are in Kauai? We live in Kauai! and on Big Island in Kealakekua Bay- and soon to be (again) residents of Durango too!
We LOVE this Island! And the Farmers markets daily!
Where are you staying? Be sure to check out Hanalei Bay at sunset, The original Balsalmic Salad and smoothies at Coconut Cup in Kapaa, We LOVE Anini Beach – so gentle for the kids and great snorkeling and we also love Kalihiwai beach on the North Shore near Kilauea – actually anywhere you go in Kauai – you will be BLESSED with Amazing Beauty and Joy and Light!
Oh…and a HUGE ps… If you have a desire to manifest something…go to the Hindu Temple in Wailua Homesteads (Kapaa) in the morning between 9-11:30 am…while meditating in the Temple – you can write your wish and place it in the basket…so far ALL of our wishes have come true almost immediately! (be sure to wrap up in the Sarongs – Lots of Mosquitoes!)
Will get in touch in DGO!
LOVE!! Jyoti
Wow! What an opportunity! Enjoy all that sunshine and fresh fruit and warm breezes.
ha ha! i love it! it’s like you’re warming up by degrees. first berkeley, then kauai…next thing we know, you’ll be writing to us from new zealand, where you’ve decided to just flip hemispheres and forget winter all together.
so stoked for you guys. have a great time!
I love that you enjoy rambutans. It’s a childhood favorite.
Have a fantastic, well-deserved vacation, my friend. Looking forward to more of your posts on your island discovery.
Oh, oh, oh beautiful!
The Critter loved the pictures. I explained to him that he was looking at the ocean, like at Coney Island. Except really so NOT like Coney Island!
Crazy wonderful! We’ve been enjoying the first frost in Florida the last 2 nights and listening to this song over and over again for counterbalance:
And you are actually there!
I love your boys’ shirts!
avocado envy!!!!! much aloha to you, you deserve this awesome vacation!!!
Yeah! Good for you. I’m DROOLING. I keep threatening to move to Hawaii (like we could just up and do that) what with my two year old who REFUSES to get dressed. It would just be so much easier to kick a naked girl outside in Hawaii than zero degrees and hoar frost.
Those bananas are so awesome. Just the right size for snacking and so very sweet. Also delish is the banana bread found at some of the local road side stands. Yummy!
Not that you are lacking for activities on Kauai, but since you’re into dying things, how about making a red dirt shirt from the famous red clay? Home made souvenir!
Have fun!!
LOVELY! Enjoy your time. :o)
In search of maui wowie? tell me if you find it! : )
