this is so funny

This is so funny, or as Col says, “this is so funny, Mama. Well, it’s sort of funny. I mean, you might think this is funny. Well, actually…” And then five years pass and your hair grows to your bottom and Col is still pre-amabling about what he’s going to tell you that is so funny.

But really, this is so funny. We were at the library today with a small group getting our signatures notarized on an affidavit requesting to city council that Durango stop spraying the local parks with herbicides. (Also, have you ever signed an affidavit? It’s very, very exciting). Afterwards, Col picked out a book on submarines and Rose picked out Princess Pigtoria and the Pea, and we all went upstairs, to the beloved adult non-fiction stacks, to track down Dave Eggers’ memoir: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (because I’m totally in the mood for tragic and dysfunctional memoir).

I found my book and was browsing the new non-fiction titles when a stranger approached me wanting to show me the pictures she just took of my “adorable kids” on her fancy phone.

“I’ll just e-mail them to you right here,” she said.

~that’s me in the background exercising questionable posture and with my new bestfriend book under my arm~

I mean really, what are the odds of having others—strangers!—start capturing sweet moments, essentially blogging for you?

Man, I love this town.

*** ** *** ** *** ** *** ** ***

We’ve got two really special weddings this weekend. One is my friend Kati who I met through this very blog, and even though she was still in diapers when I was passing notes during 10th grade geometry, she is a beloved sister-friend. The other wedding is the former town mayor and his bee-keeping lady. The theme is Vintage Circus (stolen from Martha Stewart, obviously); we’re going as the buckskin burlesque family.

Have a lovely weekend,

Rachel

technology that connects us. I love this. I love that phones and photos are making friends out of strangers. Actually redifining what the word “friend” means. It’s working to make the world smaller. I’m impressed by what photos do to connect and make peace.

if you’re in a mood for tragic and dysfunctional, I think it’s OK if I leave you with a link I got today morning from a friend (especially that you signed this affidavit): The World According To Monsanto:

I love your town too! If I saw your kids reading like that at the library, I would’ve done the same thing.

    Enjoy the weddings mama.

I love what Rebecca said and heartily endorse it… technology can be such a positive force for harmony and connectedness.

Have a great weekend of reading, weddings, and kids!

hahaha. if you, or any random stranger with a smart phone takes pictures of the buckskin burlesque family, we’ll need to see those. :) and huzzah for your affidavit!

Lucky you that someone else captured your kids candidly! Whenever I try to sneak up and take a candid shot of my kids, they notice what I’m doing and give me their cheesy fake smiles, which ruins the moment, totally. I love that you are in the photo too! What a moment to cherish!

    xoxo

Intriguing. I am waiting with bated (and baited, no doubt) breath to hear what you think of that book. It will be the tiebreaker – having loved a book that I stumbled across here with such breathless fervour, I was ready to sign an affidavit, any affidavit, confirming my slavish adoration to your blog ( I was going to write you, but that would be creepy, especially/despite the fact that we’ve never met). And then there was another book that I stumbled across here that was somewhat less frenzy-inducing, and no more shall be said. For now.

Marlene – page 81 so far and loving it. Not so much loving the narrator, which is always a problem, but finding the writing solid and good and easy to follow and the story quite incredible. Will keep you posted. XO
