in pursuit of insects

~police car moths on rudbeckia at Junction creek~

About 83% of Col and Rose’s summer has been spent in the pursuit of insects. We first saw these moths way up high in the mountains, and now it seems they’re coming down to lower elevations. They’re called “police car moths.”

All they seem to do is mate, which makes them preoccupied enough to allow children to tote them all over the place.

“Shhh…they’re mating,” Rose says authoritatively, which means something cute involving babies and mommies and more beautiful moths for her to hold.

ps: for locals: I’m offering 2 plant identification walks this month:

8/16  –  East side of Animas River (meet at bridge behind high school, trail to Paradise Island) 6:15pm – 7:15pm
8/23  – Junction Creek (meet at 2nd parking lot) 6:30pm – 8pm
The berries are ripe and there are still a lot of wonderful native plants blooming.
We will talk about edible and medicinal uses of plants, pollination, seed dispersal, what plants were important food crops for native people of this area, and more. Kids are welcome. $10/adult.
To RSVP or for more information, e-mail me at sanjuandrive(at)frontier(dot)net.
