blogging: the strange and wonderful compulsion

“Are you going to take a picture of them?” Col asked, after we scrubbed the dirt out of carroty crevices. Um, of course.
Blogging: this strange and wonderful compulsion to document the minutia of everyday life.
Anyone else know what I’m talking about?
*loved hearing about your freshy-fresh meals on my last post. Viva la local produce!
*and, I am still in the hot seat of deadlines, hoping to pull off Homestead Happenings this Wednesday.

yes, strange and pathetic most days. But, we are documenting our lives like no other generation before us! That’s a good thing! ♥

I recently read a few posts I had written almost 2 years ago and it gave me so much perspective on this blogging thing. I was so grateful to have taken the time to write about where my kids were at precisely in that moment. Because, we all *think* we’ll remember everything, and the days *feel* so long, but also every Mama knows: years pass in a flash. Documenting the minutia helps.

Oh yes. I know exactly what you mean. How about that uncomfortable feeling you (I) get when the camera is at home and you are experiencing something you’d like to document! Yikes. Or – my daughter narrates, “Lying on the bed in the sun with my daughter. Talking. I love her so much!” as we are lying on the bed, in the sun talking. :)
But it is a beautiful thing -and can you just imagine what it would be like to read through this sort of documentation of your own childhood?
I’m trying to turn my blog into a printed book (1 copy for our family) Does anyone have any recommendations?

Great carrots and most definitely yes. My kids crack me up now, as they know I’m going to photograph so many of their meals before they get to eat them. ;)
The running commentary as the 7 year old tell the salad to “strike a pose” is priceless.
One day your great-grandchildren, provided they can access the blogs (paper copies will last longer, especially in pencil), will be amazed at how life was at the turn of the century. I promise! My great-grandmother wrote in her diary for one year of high school, almost one year of college, and half a year of her first year in Durango in 1888. She also wrote when she was 14, in 1893!!! So keep on… whoever they will be, they will want to know. The photos are eseential too.
Oops, I meant 1883. She spoke of taking piano lessons, and her sister took pastel drawing lessons. I still have that aunt’s charcoal pencils. And their photos… and their writing, which tells me their thoughts and needs, culture, how they cleaned and baked and washed… We cannot assume life will be the same 100 years from now.
Absolutely! Monkey in the Middle consistently says “Are you going to blog about this?” Then Monkey girl responds, “Of course! She blogs about everything!” :) So glad you continue to blog, though! Love the reading!

I know that compulsion well since moving to the farm! I think I must have every stage of bean, zucchini and cucumber documented by this point. The sheep too are my best models!
yes, sometimes the blogging compulsion trips me out. but i, too, appreciate every post written about my children . . . and i don’t even consider myself a *real* blogger (just a scrapbook-y type, meaning the blog is my scrapbook).
i would like to print it all out at some point as well . . . i wonder when/if i will ever stop, like when the kids get older, but it’s this weird and wonderful thing i find myself drawn to. so who knows?
Holy carrots. Wow. I’ve been pulling carrots from our garden and am quite drawn to the ones that look like legs and less like the uniform carrots sold in the budget supermarkets, if you know what I’m sayin’. You’ve got some great ones in that bunch.
Oh, I do this and it makes me cringe. Reminds me that my mind is not in the moment. But alas, it isn’t always. And I’ve decided that blogging is something I enjoy.
Also, someone asked about preserving their blogs on paper. I have successfully used Blurb.com. It “slurps” your content based on your parameters and dumps it into a book that you then edit as you like. Then you order a copy or more from them just like ordering from snapfish or the like.
