Oh, I’m wishing you luck on that one. Rosie is no doubt a pro, and the chickens are no doubt pros too. Over here, we put them into “their space”–read–the fenced off area by the peach trees against the sunny side of the house. Well out of the muddy run and coop in full sunny yard-utopia, what’s not to love? All of the space they could want for dust bathing by the house, new dandelions popping up, a view to all of us, fresh water with ACV added, entertaining children who come and go with the latest dug up grub or worm…then…everyone has their heads down, preoccupied, content, Not Watching The Chickens. One silently jumps the fence, utters a low “boooook” and two more follow. I hear wings flapping and send the alert to the boys, “Chicken escape…RUN to the gate!” More flapping, birds dispersing in all directions…Delilah scratching in the garlic bed, her sister Luna takes the newly planted stawberries. Roberto the rooster stands by the hens in the beds, coaxing them to come across the bed to his treat of spiders he’s just found. Then the Wynadotte girls make a run for the peas coming up. The 2 Easter Eggers run to the front of the land to scratch in the Gardener Lady’s newly planted rental garden plot, while she is driving up to garden for the day. I redirect the boys to her first, asking them to apologize, while scooping up disgruntled hens…….You get the idea. ;-)
Maybe we should try Rosie’s technique!
