travels

2010 December 23
by Rachel Turiel

Greetings friends,

We’re in California, the kids and I! (Dan meets us here next week).

After taking the greatest picture of Col and Rose walking across the tarmac to board our hometown puddle jumper, snow falling, mountains looming, each child proudly wheeling a carry-on bag behind them, I seem to have lost my camera.

I rummaged around for it last night, hoping to snap a picture of Col and Rose snoozing side by side, evoking all the sweetness and innocence that rises to the top of sleeping children everywhere. The caption would have been something like “After two flights (one delayed), managing the children’s strange tendencies to want to caress every squalid airport surface (sometimes with their tongues), no naps, bumper to bumper traffic through San Francisco, all is well.”

And then Col spiked a fever of over 103F and raised his weary head long enough to puke piles of warm, chunky pinkness on the bed between him and Rose. He still woke before 6:00am, croaking, “why have we been in bed soooo long?”

Good thing we’ve got two grandparents on site and Rose’s new doctor kit. (Imagine picture of Rose inserted here aiming plastic syringe at you with a grin you’d never want to see on your health provider’s face).

I’ll be back here next week to tell you more about this crazy place where camellias are blooming and farmers markets are bustling with newly-harvested food.

Until then, have a lovely holiday and thank you for tuning into our ongoing adventures!

Merry Christmas, Rachel! Here’s hoping Santa doesn’t bring you any more squalid surfaces and early morning pink chunkiness. (Feel better, Col!)

Oh my dear! You should borrow a camera from us! We’re practically neighbors again and you can’t have a trip to California without a camera! Dang, Ryan literally just drove home from Berkeley too. Well let us know when and where we can connect…

Last week while stopping in to Starbucks for a treat, my four year old decided it would be amusing to like EVERY surface in the place. I can’t even believe he’s not sick. Still, I hear you loud and clear.

    Happy Holidays, Rachel.

Wishing you holiday madness and wonder, wellness and fullness, in health and spirit. We are crossing our fingers tonight that no one gets sick again. We’ve been through a handful of bugs, randomly affecting each of us. Unusual for me to get sick, and as soon as I boasted that I *never* get sick when the kids are sick, this defiant bug reared it’s head. It’s still lurking, smugly, I can feel it, at the back of my throat waiting for my moment of weakness.

Have fun at the markets, I’m envious!!! Peace to you, and love and light,

    ~Erin

I’m sorry Cole got sick, at least Rosie was ready to the rescue :o). I hope that’s the final “bump in the road” and you all have a well deserved ” Happy Holiday” with a blessed “Merry Christmas” and a “Prosperious New Year”.

Hi Rachel, Merry Christmas to you and yours. I’m glad you’re enjoying your trip, pukey bits and all. Hope Coley feels better soon.

It’s funny, my first thought too was, “Eek! You’re in Berkeley?! You need anything? I’ll hop on BART and run right over!”

I had forgotten that farmers’ markets don’t actually run year round everywhere in the world, until I was talking to my SIL in Salt Lake City one January and she said wistfully, “Your farmers’ market is still open, isn’t it?”

Best wishes for the new year!

Girl, I feel you on the puke–was in the ER myself with my baby last night because the coughing just doesn’t stop and guess what? She has pink eye, now, too! Yay! But her lungs are still clear so that’s the most important thing.

Enjoy your time here! It’s so gorgeous out today!

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Col and a wonderful time for your family!
