Why I’m so tired

2010 July 14

It’s not even the kids.

It’s this, this and this (I read this last one in one night. And it was worth every prolonged sigh I uttered at the kids the next morning at 6:30 am. Sigh, again. And if you haven’t read Kelly Corrigan’s The Middle Place about raising her young children while fighting breast cancer, this should be your next on your list).

What are you reading, and is it good enough to keep you awake far longer than you should be?

*and Thank You to everyone who left a comment on my last post. I learned a lot; firstly, chickens are vulnerable little things that everyone in the neighborhood (rural or urban) wants to eat; secondly, the laissez faire approach to broodiness may be the best route; and lastly, a brooding chicken is less of an issue than a broody 3 year old daughter.

I really enjoyed The Help. I haven’t, however, read the other two. Right now I’m reading The Passage by Justin Cronin. A Stephen King-ish type read, and I’m enjoying it so far. I have no idea where it is going to go! :)

I really loved The Help, and actually listened to it as an audio book (which I never do), purchased to pass the time on the 11-hour drive to California to visit my family. It was really awesome as an audio book, though, because they got different Southern women to read for each character – one for Miss Skeeter, one for Aibileen, and one for Minnie. They really came to life.

Right now I am reading some collected writings of John Muir, who is always fantastic, and also “The Plague and I,” by Betty MacDonald. If you haven’t read anything by her, I highly recommend it. Her most famous book is “The Egg and I,” which I read a few months ago, and I loved it so much that I sought out her others and am starting them now. Her writing is super entertaining and funny and it continually blows my mind how ahead of her time she was. Her books are all based on her own life – she was born in Boulder, CO in 1908, then moved to Butte, MT, then spent the rest of her life in Washington state until she died in 1958. The Egg and I is mostly about her experience with her first husband who decided they should move way out into the country/mountains and start a small chicken farm. It’s just so much fun to read. I highly suggest it.

p.s. thanks for visiting my blog! Baby 13 is the egg I let one of my Orpingtons hatch in the hopes that she would get over being broody. While Sofia was sitting on the egg, my other Orpington, Blanche, went broody AGAIN, then after the egg hatched, Sofia went broody AGAIN, and just last night, I went out to find Blanche sleeping in a nest on a pile of eggs AGAIN. The Orpingtons really live up to their reputations. Antyway, I mention all this because I didn’t in my previous post – it’s not just once… it’s broody ALL THE TIME… and I just take the eggs away and ignore them every time, and they both eventually get over it unscathed and like nothing ever happened.

I have read The Help and loved it! I looked at the description of Lift and feel I must read it – thanks for the recommendation. Have recently been involved in a book club and have enjoyed a lot of the books we’ve read. Have you read Sarah’s Key? That was a good one too.
I too find myself up too late to read “just one more chapter” of a book that I’m really into – and then all of a sudden it’s 2am!! I guess that’s a sign of a good book though :-)

If only I could recapture that 20-something part of myself that USED to read fiction! Or stories, even…. even if they were true! I have been reading books about diet/health, herbs and such for years now, and just when I think I’ll start reading something, it never happens… I go back to my usual! I buy the occasional book, with full intentions, but it doesn’t happen. I did make it through one entire book recently, Anastasia, of the Ringing Cedars Series. The book is horribly written, which is probably why I only got through half of book two… at any rate, I love the “ideas” in the book, but the author has written it as a true story with himself in it, and I just wish he hadn’t done that! But as far as what’s keeping my up too late – the SCD diet… I’m on 3 message boards, and went from having 20 email msgs a day to 300+… ah… not exactly pleasure-reading….

    ooh ooh, me.
um…just finished (i’m a chronic tandem/re-reading reader and i *have* read the first two before) stephen king’s “on writing” – funny, smart and quick about the craft; amy tan’s “the kitchen god’s wife” – rich, twisty and true; and margaret atwood’s “the year of the flood” – ominous gorgeous captivating *brilliance*, a sort of parallel sequel to the best book ever “oryx and crake.”
and right now – jodi picoult’s “mercy” which, so far, 97 pages in, is only a little more than “meh” – but it still keeps me up, because there’s nothing better than words before dreams…
    hope yer well.

this is the second time in three days that someone recommended the help to me. I haven’t been able to get much reading in lately, but I think after this week, I’ll have some free time to do so. I think I would also like to read the lift. How are people able to come up with two word titles that are original like this???? thanks for the recommendations.

I stayed up til 12:54am reading The Hunger Games – it’s a young adult book, but my 15 yo step son read it super fast, so I figure if he enjoyed it that much I needed to check it out. There’s a sequel to it that I’ll have to check out from the library too and a 3rd due out in late summer.

I really need to finish this book so I can catch up on some sleep!

I don’t usually read fiction, but this has been a fun (well, it’s dystopic, so there are definitely bleak elements, but the characters are fun) summer book to get into. ~H

Just put The Middle Place on my library list. Thanks for the reminder~I remember wanting to read that way back when.

During these long summer days, my time to read has been robbed by being too active during the day, leaving no energy for the night for a good book. I’m currently tackling Joyce Carol Oates’ “Dear Husband” – a compilation of short stories so it feels like it’s easier to tackle. I’ve read The Help. However, I was not a fan…but that’s a whole other can of worms.

I love reading and enjoy getting recommendations, so thank you. I just may have to get to the library for a copy of Lift someday. It sounds really intriguing.
